There were silk and glass butterflies. There was an entree inspired by a California roll and a performance by Paul Simon. On Wednesday evening, as the Bidens hosted Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and his wife, Yuko Kishida, at the fifth state dinner of the Biden administration, Dr. Jill Biden, wearing an evening dress from Oscar de la Renta, stood with her husband to greet their guests of honor at the North Portico. Designed by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the dress flowed in a watery fade from sapphire blue to light silver and was covered in hand-embroidered floral geometric beading. She was connecting to a longstanding relationship: Oscar de la Renta has dressed almost every first lady since Jackie Kennedy; Dr. Biden first wore the label for her inaugural state dinner in 2022.

Apfel died on Friday at the age of 102, according to a post on her verified Instagram page. “I go at it full, I’m very passionate about what I do,” Apfel told CNN in an interview in 2018. Jemal Countess/WireImage/Getty Images“(Styling the White House) was a relatively easy job actually, because everything had to be as close as humanly possible to the way it was,” Apfel told the Guardian in 2015. The exhibition, “Rara Avis (Rare Bird),” was the first time the museum had paid tribute to a living woman who was not a fashion designer. She left her husband for the shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, largely giving up performing in the process. When Onassis eventually married Jackie Kennedy instead, Callas was alone and bereft, without either the vocation that had given her purpose or the man who had replaced it. There was always that sense of every phrase being considered, without feeling studied — of a voice with a purpose. But among the most pernicious stereotypes about Callas is that she was an actress who could barely sing, who got by on charisma alone. Listen to her tender “O mio babbino caro.” Listen to her delicate yet commanding “D’amor sull’ali rosee.” She was always a bel canto singer at heart.

Rosalynn Carter, who died on Sunday at age 96, was rarely included on any list of best-dressed first ladies. She was not generally called “stylish” or “trendsetting.” She did not play the White House dress-up game, at least as designed by predecessors such as Dolley Madison and Jackie Kennedy. But that does not mean Mrs. Carter did not fully understand the power and political use of clothes, or how to strategically deploy them during her time in Washington. Starting with Mrs. Carter’s declaration, after Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, that the one item she would be taking with her to the White House from Georgia was her sewing machine. And it set the tone for what came next — which was the greatest dressing scandal of the administration.

“Amore!”The words echoed through Studio Salvadore, a family-run glassblowing workshop on Murano, the Italian island near Venice known for its centuries-old glass industry. It was 3 p.m. on a Friday in late July, and Mr. Findletar had been making drinking glasses with a small team since around 6:30 in the morning. At the mouth of a furnace, colorful glass rods lined up on the head of a shovel were melting together. Mr. Findletar, 49, flicked water droplets at the glass, which would become a cup, to make bubbles. “I call this dirtying up the glass,” Mr. Findletar said.

WASHINGTON — I think about Jackie Kennedy several times a day. Tour groups come by my house in Georgetown to see John Kennedy’s bachelor pad, where he was living when he met Jacqueline Bouvier at a dinner party. “Jackie told Jack he needed to get out of this dump,” the guide said. (Never a Heathcliff type, Jack sometimes treated her, as Jackie once told Gore Vidal, as though she were a campaign asset, like Rhode Island.) Carl Sferrazza Anthony’s new biography, “Camera Girl,” offers a lovely snapshot of Jackie’s single years in D.C., working at The Washington Times-Herald.

The home was the Kennedy's first as a newlywed couple. John F. Kennedy says goodbye to his wife, Jackie, who is on her way to classes at Georgetown University's Foreign Service School. One of the old homes of former President John F. Kennedy is about to be listed publicly for sale in Washington, DC, and the listing includes candid photos of his life with Jackie Kennedy early in their marriage. The home at 3321 Dent Place NW, where the Kennedys "signed their first lease as a newly married couple," will be listed this week for $2 million, according to Redfin. The broker, Michael Brennan, did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.
This compound in Washington D.C.'s historic Georgetown neighborhood is listed for $26,500,000. The centerpiece home on 3017 N St. NW was built in 1794 by the second mayor of Georgetown. It later became the residence of a secretary of state, a KGB spy, and First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Other significant residents include a US secretary of war, a KGB spy, and a former Miss America. 3017 N Street NW was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
President Joe Biden will keep with tradition and feature a blue and white Air Force One fleet. The news comes years after former President Donald Trump proposed that the colors change. Trump's changes would have resulted in additional heat on significant plane parts, the Air Force said. Air Force One, the plane of the president of the United States, is seen during takeoff, June 1968. Every Air Force One plane since has kept with tradition and featured a blue and white design.
